Metal stamping is a frequently used in automotive stamping dies manufacturing procedure. It is the most essential key technology in the manufacturing sector.  To maintain this status, the metal stamping process must continue to innovate and improve.

Sheet metal forming manufacturing improvements strive to reduce the time and complexity of stamping procedures while maintaining the highest standards demanded by various application industries. This Article discusses the innovative materials in stamping die manufacturing.

What metals are best for stamping?

When creating precision metal components, stamping dies manufacturers have to select metal stamping materials that are compatible with the stamping process. The material also offers the functional and aesthetic properties required for the application.

Ferrous:

Ferrous metals include a substantial amount of iron in their elemental composition. Steel is an iron ore-based alloy. It is a widely stamped ferrous metal. Ferrous metals with higher carbon concentrations are often stronger and brittle. Those with lower carbon content are softer and more ductile.

Nonferrous:

Nonferrous metals do not contain significant levels of iron. This reduces their vulnerability to oxidation. Copper, aluminum, brass, and bronze are the nonferrous materials used in metal stamping. Some innovative materials are listed below:

TOOL OR COLD WORK STEEL

The material grade 1.2379 is regarded as the classic steel in die manufacture. This material is also utilized as a complete cutting die plate because it has excellent dimensional stability after hardening.

Meusburger also provides NP precision bars manufactured from this material. It is typically used for medium strength strip materials. The working hardness is about 60-62 HRC.

High speed steel

High-speed steel 1.3343 is the standard material for dies and cutting elements. It is more resistant to wear and harder than material 1.2379. It is suitable for medium strength strip material.  automotive stamping dies manufacturers use it, particularly for thick sheets. The working hardness is about 63-65 HRC.

Powder metallurgy steel

Powder metallurgical steels are extremely robust due to their homogenous structure. Material grade 1.3344 PM is used for heavy duty dies and cutting punches. It is mostly used for strip materials with strengths up to 600 N/mm. The working hardness is about 63-65 HRC.

The powder metallurgical steel M V10 PM with 10% vanadium is used for dies and punches with high loads. Because of its highly uniform structure, it offers good edge stability, even for components with complex shapes.

M V10 PM Steel is appropriate for strip materials with high strengths and high abrasive wear, such as stainless steel. The working hardness is about 66-68 HRC.

CARBIDE

The corrosion-resistant universal carbide CF-H40S+ has an outstanding balance. It provides the optimal balance of hardness and fracture toughness while maintaining high edge stability.

Its ultimate wear resistance ensures the die and punch have the longest possible service life. The metal is used to create strip materials with the maximum strength.

To conclude

Metal stamping machines are used in many sectors to work with sheet metal. To maintain a competitive advantage, stamping dies manufacturers must be able to expand and be more versatile in their production capacities.

Exploring these innovative materials in automotive stamping dies opens new horizons for improved durability and cost-efficiency.
